The brake system is the central safety system in a vehicle. The focus here is on the brake disk as its technical properties are crucial for the braking response of a vehicle and its service life.

At around the turn of the millennium, an automobile manufacturer installed ceramic brake disks in series-manufactured motor vehicles for the first time as, compared with conventional metal brake disks, they feature the following properties:

  • Low weight
  • No decrease in the braking effect even with longer deceleration distances
  • No juddering
  • High thermal stability
  • High thermal shock resistance
  • High hardness
  • High wear resistance
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Unusually long service lifetime

The material that brings these special properties is a non-oxide ceramic composite of the type SiSiC, with carbon fibres embedded in the matrix.

Some characteristic properties of such a material (manufacturer’s specifications) are summarized in the following:

  • Density: 2.45 g/cm³
  • Tensile strength: 20 – 40 MPa
  • Bending strength: 50 – 80 MPa
  • E modulus: 30 GPa
  • Strain at break: 0.3 %
  • Pseudoductile behaviour
  • Maximum application temperature: 900 °C
  • Thermal conductivity: 40 W/m/K
  • Linear coefficient of thermal expansion: 2.6 – 3.0 ppm/K
