Components made of monolithic oxide and non-oxide ceramics as well as composites are interesting for use in combustion engines of motorized vehicles in positions in their design that require good resistance to mechanical, thermal, thermomechanical, electrical and corrosive stresses combined with low weight and high geometric precision even for small component sizes.

Depending on the specific requirements, today different ceramic materials are used. Listed in the following are such materials with selected properties that explain their suitability for use in combustion engines.

With the use of components made of monolithic ceramic materials and composites, the consumption of fuel and lubricants during operation of the combustion engine is minimized, and consequently the emission of harmful exhaust gases can be kept to a relatively low level.
