The machinery and equipment used in on- and offshore engineering are operated under sometimes extreme conditions and increasingly on the seabed at depths of more than 1000 metres. One example is the exploitation of the Ormen Lange gas field begun in 2007, which is located around 120 km off the Norwegian coast. The equipment must meet high technical requirements in respect of reliability, durability and low maintenance.

Typical requirements for highly stressed components in this area include:

  • Ability to withstand high pressure
  • Resistance to changing loads
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Mechanical strength
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Impact strength

Products made of oxide ceramic materials that are specially optimized for the specific application can easily comply with requirements of this type.

For instance, it is possible today to make high-vacuum-tight, brazed feedthroughs for currents in the order of 800 A in a combination of Al2O3– ceramic – copper which withstand rapidly changing stresses caused by high pressure, abrupt temperature changes and mechanical impact in electrical switching processes.
In separator tanks used for the separation of sand, water and oil, the boundary areas of these three phases can be determined with appropriately designed oxide ceramic sensors. The dielectric constant of ZrO2 ceramic at around 25 enables small sizes combined with high mechanical resistance.
