In laboratory measurement systems, thermogravimetric analysis is a standard method used to record the behaviour of a substance as a function of time and temperature. For this purpose, the substance is placed in a crucible that should not influence the behaviour of the substance during analysis. As the container, often thin-walled crucibles made of high-purity, dense-sintered Al2O3 ceramics are used.

Properties of such a ceramic typical for this applications are listed in the following:

  • Purity >99.5 %
  • Density >98 % of the theoretical value
  • Thermal stability to around 1800 °C
  • High resistance to thermal shock
  • High resistance to deformation even at a high temperature level
  • High corrosion resistance
  • Wall thickness in the range of 0.5 mm

In some cases, crucible materials made of Al2O3 ceramic with the above-mentioned properties have been part of the introduced standard in TGA analysis for decades.
