Successful stereotactic brain operations first require the precise localization of, for instance, a tumour in the brain. As this method uses imaging methods such as CT or MRT, another precondition is the secure fixing of the patient’s skull with the help of a ring that remains in place during the entire operation.

This ring, the instruments used by the surgeon and the other components used during the operation in the tomograph have to meet the following requirements:

  • Approved in compliance with the Medical Products Act
  • Non-magnetizable material
  • Fabrication of closed and open rings with a diameter larger than 250 mm
  • Stable in sterilizing conditions
  • Mechanically robust

Components made of high-grade oxide and non-oxide ceramic materials like, for example, doped ZrO2 and Si3N4, are approved for such applications in compliance with the Medical Products Act and have proven effective for far longer than 10 years. Depending on the material, they boast the following technical properties:

  • Purity > 99.5 %
  • No open porosity
  • High stiffness
  • High strength
  • High edge stability
  • No magnetizability
  • Minimum generation of artefacts during imaging
  • High stability in sterilizing conditions
