Company profile

Fraunhofer IKTS – The Partner for the Development of Single Prototypes and Pilot Production

The Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS covers the field of advanced ceramics from basic preliminary research through to the entire range of applications. Superbly equipped laboratories and technical facilities covering 30 000 sqm of useable space have been set up for this purpose at the sites in Dresden and Hermsdorf. Based on comprehensive materials expertise in advanced ceramic materials, the development work covers the entire value chain, all the way to prototype production and system integration.

For any class of ceramic materials, Fraunhofer IKTS has access to all the standard processes such as powder preparation, forming, heat treatment and finishing. In functional ceramics, it holds a particular core competency in paste and tape casting technology. Furthermore, Fraunhofer IKTS is able to transfer developments from lab to pilot scale. Industrially suited equipment is available for partners and customers, in order to realize prototypes and pilot-production series for market launch, to optimize production processes, or to implement quality assurance processes.

In addition, Fraunhofer IKTS has decades of experience in the non-destructive testing of components and systems. With the latest measuring technologies, automation concepts and approaches for the interpretation of complex data sets, it offers solutions for quality control and condition monitoring – from sensors to complete user-adapted systems.

In order to demonstrate and qualify ceramic technologies and components as well as non-destructive test methods for new product ideas or industries, Fraunhofer IKTS operates in different market-oriented divisions: Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, Electronics and Microsystems, Energy, Water, Environmental and Process Engineering, Bio- and Medical Technology as well as Non-Destructive Testing and Monitoring. In the cross-sectional divisions of Materials and Processes as well as Material and Process Analysis, established and new technologies are continuously being further developed as “enabling technologies“ for all other fields. The focus is on the challenges facing society, e.g. in the field of mobility, circular economy or digital production.
