New Course on High-tech Ceramics at EMPA

The one-day course on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at EMPA in Dübendorf/CH offers a comprehensive overview of the development of high-tech ceramic materials, their production, properties, fields of application and future potential, as well as an exchange between industrial developers and researchers. The aim of this one-day course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the development of high-tech ceramic materials. In addition to the basics of production and physical and chemical properties, new trends and future potential will be discussed.

The speakers will provide an overview of the wide range of applications of ceramic materials in mechanical engineering, energy and environmental technology and implant materials. The course also aims to promote dialogue between industrial developers and EMPA’s ceramics researchers. A tour through the laboratory will demonstrate the steps involved in the production of ceramic powder raw materials, shaping, sintering and characterization of the sintered components. The course is intended for engineers and technicians working in R&D, design, production, manufacturing and marketing, as well as other decision-makers who wish to learn more about the background and latest trends in ceramic materials in energy and environmental technology. Course content includes:

  • Fundamentals of Ceramic Materials
  • Production of micro- and nanoscale ceramics
  • High-tech ceramics in process and environmental engineering
  • Bioceramics and ceramic-based composites
  • Characterisation of ceramic based materials
  • Applications and emerging trends
  • Hands-on demonstrations of high-tech ceramics production

The lectures will be held in German, the presentation slides will be in English.
