OPTICS // DETECTION // PHOTOGRAPHY

Transparent ceramic materials are interesting for the lens systems of objectives in photography insofar as, on account of their high refractive index, they enable small sizes. In addition to transparent Al2O3, in recent years, focus has shifted to transparent ZrO2, as this material when doped with 8 mol% Y2O3 is also available in cubic form at room temperature. On account of its optically isotropic character, no losses in transparency can be expected in this respect. A particular advantage is its very high refractive index (2.2) compared with that of Al2O3 (approx. 1.76), which enables commensurately small component sizes.

Stepper motors are used in cameras for instance for minimum-delay, precision focussing of the object to be photographed. For this purpose, components made of dense-sintered, fine-crystalline oxide ceramics are suitable, like, for instance, Al2O3, Al2O3-ZrO2 mixed ceramics and doped ZrO2. Strip- and pin-like parts made of these materials boast the following application-related properties:

  • Purity ≥99,8 %
  • Density > 99 % of the theoretical value
  • Selectively adjusted crystallite size distribution in the microstructure, sometimes with 100 % < 5 µm
  • High mechanical strength
  • High stiffness
  • High hardness and consequently high wear resistance
  • High geometric and topographic precision
