The reliable function of plants, machinery and equipment incorporating electrical and electronic component assemblies requires reliably operating sensors, control and regulation systems over long periods.

Ceramic sensors can often be found in machinery and equipment that must meet demanding requirements. In such applications, they monitor mainly non-electric variables such as, for example, temperature, pressure, flow rate, distance, acceleration, moisture content, gas concentration and transform these into electrical signals, which are then further processed in downstream electronic component assemblies.

Ceramic materials typically used in this field are Al2O3, ZrO2, piezoceramics, Si3N4 and magnetoceramics, depending on the specific application.

In addition to measuring the variables, the materials often have to meet other requirements:

  • Corrosion resistance
  • Wear resistance
  • Mechanical strength
  • High-temperature strength
  • Thermal shock resistance
  • Non-magnetizability
  • Approval for food in areas in contact with the product
  • Suitability for vacuum-tight material composites by means on material-to-material joints

The special strength of ceramic sensor components is that they can meet requirements comprising combinations of various above-mentioned properties and others.

Today ceramic sensors are proven state-of-the-art components in numerous stationary and mobile applications, for instance in process engineering, environmental engineering, analysis, automotive engineering and in households.
