The applications of ceramic components for plants, machinery and equipment in medical therapy are exceptionally diverse. The requirements to be met by the ceramic materials used focus mainly on the following properties:

  • Regulatory approval for any material surfaces in direct contact with the human body
  • Material purity >99.5 %
  • High geometric precision with clearances sometimes in the range of 0.001 mm, consequently excluding the need for additional sealing against fluids
  • High thermal and thermomechanical stability
  • Stable in sterilizing conditions
  • High corrosion resistance
  • High electrical insulation
  • Non-magnetizability
  • Realization of firmly bonded high-vacuum-tight ceramic-ceramic and ceramic-metal composite components

For such applications, components made of high-purity, dense-sintered oxide and non-oxide ceramic materials like, for example, Al2O3, Al2O3-ZrO2 mixed ceramics, doped ZrO2 and Si3N4 have proven effective over many years of use.
