POWER ENGINEERING // POWER GENERATION // POWER TRANSPORT // STATIONARY ENERGY STORAGE // MOBILE ENERGY STORAGE // RENEWABLE ENERGY

The generation of electrical energy by means of wind power is a core area of renewable energy generation. In the wind power plants used for generation, synchronous or asynchronous generators are operated, which usually supply an alternating voltage of 690 V to be transformed to 10 – 30 kV.

The magnets installed in such generators often consist of Nd2Fe14B, an alloy that is a rare earth magnet. The most powerful permanent magnets are currently made from this material.

Ferritic materials cannot yet match the performance of this alloy. At various places, however, intensive material development is underway, not only against the background of the higher achievable power, but also because of the high demand expected in other applications and also on account of the reduction in the demand for rare earth metals such as Nd or La.
