Fraunhofer HTL Centre for High-Temperature Materials and Design: Inauguration of New Research Facility

The new build was financed by the EU, the German government and the government of the Federal State of Bavaria with EUR 20 million. It covers 2600 m2, providing workspace for around 80 employees. The Fraunhofer HTL Centre for High- Temperature Materials and Design develops materials and components as well as measurement and simulation methods for application at high temperatures. Key applications are in power, drive and thermal engineering. A focus of research is improving the quality as well as the material and energy efficiency of thermal processes in industry. With the new facility, the Fraunhofer HTL Centre has also added to its technical equipment. Two latest-generation 3D-printers are now available for the fabrication of ceramic and metal components. In addition, a fully automatic 450 kV computer tomography system for non-destructive testing of components, a prepreg system for coating 2D-fabrics and an ultramodern 5-axis machining centre for machining hard materials have been installed. The range of equipment also includes several thermooptic measurement systems specially developed at the HTL for testing high-temperature materials and optimizing their production processes.
