Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation CEI Established in the USA

On July 25 the contract was signed by Fraunhofer/DE and the University of Connecticut UCONN/US for the establishment of a new research facility. The mission of the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation CEI at the University of Connecticut is to develop advanced technologies related to energy storage, fuel cells, in-stream hydro, power management and distribution through contract research.

CeramTec Opens New Plant in China

The CeramTec Group opened in July a new production site in China. This is the ceramics manufacturer’s response to the growing demand for technical ceramics in the Asian region.

Robust Piezo Actuators and Sensitive Electronics Replace Batteries

Radio sensors can monitor installations at locations, which are difficult to get to and thus support automation. The energy supply is an important consideration in such applications. In order to dispense with the need for batteries and the associated servicing work, it is possible to use energy from the surrounding environment: energy harvesting.

Advances Thermal Barrier Coatings for Turbine Engines

Innovnano/PT, an expert manufacturer of high performance ceramic powder, has produced highly pure 4YSZ (4 mol-% yttria stabilised zirconia), a thermal barrier coating material with exceptional properties for withstanding extreme temperature variations found in demanding operating environments.

Hot Stuff – Ceramics for Industrial Heating Applications

Electrical heating elements are used in innumerable industrial processes. They are used in plastics technology for heating injection nozzles, hot runners and tools, and in chemicals technology for melting and evaporating samples. In automotive engineering they are used, for instance, for the ignition of fuel mixes (hot surface igniters) and for heating sensors (e.g. !-sensor). … Read more

FE-Simulation (FEA) for the Designing of Ceramic/Metal Assemblies – the End of Trial and Error?

With the FEA as a part of the integrative design process it is possible to precisely calculate the stresses, which are induced in ceramic components during the assembly or operation. By using postprocessors short-term and also long-term fracture probabilities can be calculated. The precision of the results depends highly on the used input data and … Read more

Product and System Innovation Based on Integrative Design with Ceramic (IDC): Material Alternatives

In the second chapter of the series on ICD the main advanced ceramic materials such as zirconia, alumina, silicon nitride and silicon carbide are presented. Their properties, in particular mechanical properties strongly depend on manufacturing, but also on size and geometry and raw material quality. Therefore data found in literature as well as in suppliers … Read more
