Ceramics Expo Virtual Review

COVID-19 has changed the way we conduct business, exchange information, share ideas, but above all, how we meet. This year’s edition of Ceramics Expo, the leading North American trade show for the technical ceramics and glass industries, had been scheduled to take place in September, in Cleveland, Ohio/US. Once it became impossible to go ahead with a large scale event, and a decision was made to postpone, the organizers were faced with a challenge; how can we continue to serve the advanced ceramics and glass industries, how can we continue to facilitate trade and business and how can we help people interact with one another? The solution was Connect, a large-scale virtual conference and meetings program, delivered through a digital event platform.

Connect 2020 – the Global AM Community Meets Virtually at Formnext

On 10–12 November 2020, Formnext Connect – the virtual edition of the world’s leading AM (Additive Manufacturing) exhibition – intends to set the tone for the industry with an outstanding line up of content. It will also offer all its participants a great deal of value in the form of intelligent matchmaking and exhibitors’ presentations of their latest innovations.

CO2 Emissions in Steel Production: from 100 to 5 %!

How can CO2 emissions be reduced by up to 95 % as efficiently as possible in the production of crude steel? Answers are provided by the MACOR project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and undertaken by the Fraunhofer Institutes IKTS/DE, ISI/DE and UMSICHT/DE as well as Salzgitter AG/DE. Fraunhofer IKTS in Dresden contributed its expertise in process simulation and high-temperature electrolysis and coordinated the project.

INMATEC Technologies GmbH Expands Capacities for Feedstock Production

A niche technology is gaining ground: Ceramic Injection Moulding (CIM) is becoming increasingly popular and convincing more and more users. As a result, the demand for ceramic feedstock has grown rapidly in recent years. INMATEC Technologies GmbH has significantly expanded its production capacities and adapted them to the increased order volume. The company from Rheinbach/DE was able to strengthen its worldwide market leadership in development and production of feedstock for the CIM process.

HIP – a Partner for MIM, CIM and AM

Innovation in Hot Isostatic Presses (HIPs) for post-compaction of components originally formed from metal powders. HIPs are machines operated at high temperature and high pressure. Developed in the USA in the 1940s and 1950s for the production of nuclear fuel elements, they have evolved from specialised applications to become a standardised industrial process today. Almost … Read more

EvoCera – as Strong as Ceramic and as Safe as Steel

DOCERAM GmbH/DE, a specialist in high-quality industrial ceramic products, has introduced EvoCera, a completely new ceramic material. It combines the properties of the latest high-performance ceramics with the ductility of steel. Its great advantage is that the strength of EvoCera can be calculated and so the workpiece can be designed based on the Finite Element … Read more

CerAMfacturing of Si3N4 Components

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is a high performance ceramic material. The entirety of its outstanding properties such as strength, toughness and hardness, even at very high temperatures makes it superior compared to most of technical ceramics due to its covalent bonding type [1].

3D-Printing: From Multi-Material to Functionally-Graded Ceramic

Fields such as medicine, electronics and aerospace are using 3D-printing to overcome problems that require innovative new technology to make further progress past their already established applications. Multimaterial in 3D-printing is one area that is garnering widespread attention due to the wide range of possibilities that it provides to make parts which are more functional … Read more

FDM/FFF – an Alternative to CIM Manufacturing of Prototype and Small Quantities of Ceramic Part?

Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been an important issue for more than a decade. There are already numerous companies that manufacture ceramic products or semi-finished products via different AM methods. FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication), which is also known as FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is still a rapidly growing manufacturing process in the field of AM. In … Read more

How the ESRF is Using Zetamix for High-Temperature Sample Environment

A synchrotron is a particles accelerator that generates one of the world’s most intense X-ray source, 100 billion time brighter than X-ray used in hospitals. Thanks to this technology, scientists are able to analyse the structure of matter down to the atomic level. Located in Grenoble, France, the ESRF is the result of the cooperation … Read more
